How to sacrifice mice?

There are different ways to sacrifice mice. The most commonly used methods are:

(1) Euthanasia

Mice can be euthanized by:

• Intraperitoneal injection with barbiturates or other suitable euthanasia solution
• Inhalation of carbon dioxide, methoxyflurane, or halothane
• Cervical dislocation with sedation or anesthesia.

(2) Cervical dislocation
Cervical dislocation can be done with or without sedation or anesthesia depending on the nature of experiments. Cervical dislocation without sedation can only be done when the experiments require to preclude the use of chemicals. It should be scientifically justified and approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.
